This Day In Ann Dvorak History – Property of Howard Hughes

Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 241

On August 29, 1931 Ann Dvorak signed a contract with Howard Hughes’ Caddo Company. Howard Hawks had selected her to play Cesca in Scarface opposite Paul Muni a few weeks earlier, and the contract officially made her Howard Hughes’ property.

She would only make one other film for Hughes, Sky Devils, before her started loaning her out to Warner Bros. Mere months after signing Ann, Hughes would sell her contract to WB, which she was less than thrilled with. It was downhill from there.

At least in August 1931, the world was hers.

Very attractive photo of the young Ann. Can certainly understand why both Howards were smitten.

Is that a wink she’s giving to the camera?

Oh yes, that’s a winking Cesca Camonte.

82 years later, August 29, 2013, Glenda Farrell night in ‘Summer Under The Stars’ on TCM.

Just watched “I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang”. Hadn’t seen it in a while. Awesome film. Paul Muni is outstanding; maybe his best performance. And Glenda shines playing (against type) a real rotten bitch.

You know, someone should write a biography of Glenda Farrell some day …

    “Gold Diggers Of 1935” next.

Too, too bad Ann could never have gotten in just one the ‘Gold Digger’ series.

I love Glenda Farrell. If I were ever inclined to write another bio, she’s be a top contender.

I dvr’ed a couple of the “Torchy” films, “Gold Diggers 35”, and “Talk of the Town”. Her role is a small, supporting one in the last film, but she’s memorable in her big scene with Ronald Colman.

We are a cable-less house, so no TCM. When those fat Ann Dvorak royalty checks come in, I might splurge at the Warner Archive on some Glenda titles. (I may be waiting a while :D)
