Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 160
Racing Lady is going to air on Turner Classic Movies on Monday, June 10th at 6:00am PST.
Just watched it.
Part of ‘Hattie McDaniel’ day on TCM.
As you pointed out, Ann, who plays a woman who owns and races horses, never is seen actually riding one at any part of the proceedings.
And totally agree with the assessment of the veritable oaken woodenness of Smith Ballew as a love interest.
She does get to look very nice in the one scene wearing an evening dress at a gala or party.
The 1930’s racial stereotypes offered in this one are a little hard to get around at times.
The whole thing takes place in just under an hour and, all in all, Ann is not given much to do.
She has a couple of fine scenes with Harry Carey. Loved her shriek early in the film when Harry agreed to start racing her horse.
I also liked her look with the various hats/caps thruout the film.
The racial stereotypes were, indeed, cringe inducing.
I’m sure that RKO considered this a “B” picture.
