My Favorite Ann Dvorak Photo

Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 115

This image of Ann Dvorak as Cesca Camonte in Scarface is my all-time favorite photo of her. I have used it in multiple posts over the years (including one earlier this week), and for the first 5 years this website was up, it was the image posted on the entry page.

I’m not exactly sure why it’s my favorite. I guess it’s mainly because it is such a striking photo of Ann who has at least three feet of make-up piled on her face, along with two cans of hairspray. From this point on, Ann was always a glamorous movie star, but never looked quite this way again.

This is the lone photo I own from a former Hollywood shop called Collector’s Bookstore. Their prices stank and the guys who worked there were extremely rude, so I never bought anything the handful of times I went in, and usually left the place angry. Someone actually bought this for me for $30 or $35, which was a ridiculous price in 2001. Still, I am happy I have it because it is one of the crown jewels in my collection. And yes, because I love it so much, I did use it in the book.

I love that photo as well. The makeup, the body and the style really fitted the flapper trend – correct me if I’m wrong! 🙂 Oh! I was wondering if you collected any Ann autograph photos? ^_^

The movie was set during prohibition, so yes she would have had a flapperesque look! I do have a handful of autographed photos which I will do a post on in the very near future. Thanks for the idea!

dont ya just LOVE it when you go into someones place of business and they treat you like they’re doing YOU a favor by actually stopping whatever it is they’re doing and speaking to you? even better when they cop an attitude, treat you rudely then begrudginly take your money as yet another favor!

btw i love answering my phone like Vince Barnett…”Mr-uh-Carmonte’s-uh-secreteddy”

its the little things that get us through the day sometimes 😉

Unsurprisingly, they’re no longer in business. Sadly, I got outbid on all the Ann stuff when their stock was auctioned.

I think I may need to start answering my phone like that!

My favorite also, at least of those I’ve seen. I’ve seen reprints of this on eBay, but I’d love to have a nice original to frame and hang in my house. I’d gladly pay what you did, but I don’t think that’s going to happen in 2013!

    All the best.

Nowadays, I’d also gladly pay what I did in 2001!

My favorite image if Ann is in scarface when she tells the partner “I’m eighteen”. She has beautiful eyes telling him come on!
