“Murder in the Clouds” Lobby Card

Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 217

Ann Dvorak made A LOT of movies in 1934. After walking out on her contract for 9 months in 1932/33, Warner Bros. made her stew for a few months, but then seemed ready to make up for lost time and put her to work. Overall, the roles she got were supporting ones and she usually wasn’t prominently displayed on the poster art. An exception was Murder in the Clouds co-starring Lyle Talbot. A while back, we took a look at the one-sheet which features a gorgeous image of Ann and Lyle. Today is a lobby card from the film, which includes Ann, even if she’s not too prominent.

Curiously, this is the only lobby card I have seen from this film, so I am not sure if she was heavily utilized on the others.

Lyle Talbot’s time at Warner Brothers ended at about the same time Ann’s did, didn’t it? He for his SAG activism, right?

As cited in previous posts, Lyle’s daughter Margaret has written a book about her father’s amazingly long show business career. Currently carrying on the Talbot name in the ‘family business’ is his granddaughter Caitlin,

whose dad, Stephen, played Jerry Mathers’ friend Gilbert in the old “Leave It To Beaver” television series.

A favorite quote of mine of Lyle’s — “You kids think you invented free love in the Sixties? You have no idea what it was like to be young and beautiful in the Thirties in Hollywood. Everyone was sleeping with everyone.”

    Do tell, Lyle. Do tell.

I read Margaret’s wonderful book, though I don’t recall the details of his career.

When a friend of mine was proofreading the Dvorak book last year, she came upon Lyle’s name for the 5th or 6th time and jokingly jotted down the comment, “This guy again?”
