“Merrily We Live” on TCM

Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 318

Merrily We Live is going to air on Turner Classic movies on Friday, November 15 at 11:45pm PST.

Dvorak 15.3

This movie is shown on TCM often enough (this is the third time this year) that you probably already know what I think of it, but if not you can see my previous comments here.

Also, this photo of Ann joking around with Brian Aherne is one of my favorite photos which is why it made it into the book.

TCM is running this film again as part of their Friday nite in November screwball comedy festival. As you have noted before, it has its moments, but not up to its predecessor “My Man Godfrey”. Yes, this is a great photo.

TCM aired “Sweet Smell of Success” last nite (what a script, though noone actually talks like that in real life, right?), and couldn’t help but notice the similiarity of the relationships between JJ Hunsecker and sister Suzie with Tony/Cesca from “Scarface”. Older brother’s overprotectiveness has some definite incestuous undertones.

I’m now hoping for the arrival of “HFR” by the long Thanksgiving weekend. Sorta feels a little like waiting for Christmas morning to open up the presents when I was a kid.

I’m not a huge fan of either Lancaster or Curtis, but I love them both in that one.

Geez, that’s a lot of pressure! Hope the book lived up to expectations.
