Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 64
Some of the other classic film bloggers are having a little fun starting this week with the 3rd annual Classic Movie Actresses Tournament. Different sites are hosting different decades of the tournament, and you can see the full run down over at A Mythical Monkey Writes About the Movies. Amazingly enough, our dear Ann is included in the 1930s bracket, though she’s rather unfairly pitted against Marlene Dietrich. She seems to be holding her own so far, but can probably use a boost from some of her devoted fans. So, if you get a second, pop on over to All Good Things blog and cast your vote for the Divine Ms. Dvorak. Voting for this first round wraps up on Wednesday evening.
Voted..BUT…I have little hope for accuracy on the site. It shows Kay Frances ahead of Louise Brooks. That’s like saying that your “Rolls Kinardley†is beating my “Ferarriâ€. (For the uninitiated, a “Rolls Kinardley†is a vehicle that rolls down one hill and “kin hardly†make it up the next!)
However, for Ann to be doing so well (as I’m writing this they’re tied in vote count) against the more famous Marlene Dietrich is great. However, when all the Christina Rice loyalists are finished voting, Dietrich won’t have a chance.
I think more of the youngsters are now familiar with Kay Francis because of her pre-Code films. Also, Louise should have probably been listed in the 1920s, don’t ya think?
BTW, thanks for the Sky Devils ad! It makes the movie look much more interesting than it actually is.
Yes, Brooks should have been in the 1920’s section as her best films were in the silent area. After she returned from Germany where she appeared in the classic “Pandora’s Boxâ€, things pretty much went downhill from there. Her late 1930’s films were done because she needed money desperately, and it shows. Unfortunately…
Brooksie listed in the 30’s? this is why i never participate in those kind of things
Except this time, when you went and voted for Ann! 😀
failed you i did, into exile i must go….
You failed Ann. YOU FAILED ANN!
Well, the voting is over and Ann wound up 3 votes behind Marlene Dietrich. The comment at the end of the voting was “Newcomers Ann Dvorak and Glenda Farrell did extremely well in their maiden tourney losing by only a combined 6 votes.†Both of their competitors (Dietrich and Shearer) were very famous, much publicized stars; so for Ann (and Glenda Farrell) to do so well is really saying something about Ann’s place in history.
Not to worry, after a “certain book†hits the street, Ann will be a shoe in next time!!
As I mentioned before, people seem to be much more aware of Ann now than they were 15 years ago, though I am still surprised she would get that many votes again Dietrich. If I ever felt crazy enough to write another biography, Glenda Farrell would definitely be a candidate!
