Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 34
In all honesty, I am not a sports fan and everything I know about football (which isn’t much) comes from watching five seasons of Friday Night Lights. I didn’t even know it was Super Bowl weekend until I overheard some co-workers talking about it yesterday. That said, since today is the big game and I happen to own two lobby cards featuring Ann Dvorak AND a football, could there be a more perfect time to post these beauties from College Coach?
Enjoy the game (if that’s your thing)! I will be busy with Sunday brunch and a trip to the Griffith Park pony rides with my little one.
Nice lobby cards!! But this is not one of my favorite Ann Dvorak movies..It has a good cast alright; Dick Powell, Pat O’Brien, Lyle Talbot, all “heavy weights†in acting at the time. Also there is a host of notable “othersâ€: Nat Pendleton, Guinn Williams, Donald Meek, Hugh Herbert, and Phillip Reed; all excellent additions to any movie.
But the plot is fairly predictable, as is Pat O’Brien’s machine gun verbal delivery style. Dick Powell sings only one song instead of the half dozen or so that (it seemed) in his later movies; but this is understandable because it basically is a Pat O’Brien vehicle. Unfortunately, for me anyway, it seems like Ann just walks through her part in this movie instead of giving it her usual “Ann Dvorak†presence. If there is anything unusual about the flick it would have to be the Television set used to view another football game early in the plot (talk about predicting the future!).
Would I purchase this movie (if I didn’t have it)…probably, but only because it has an early Ann Dvorak as part of the cast. It’s an OK “watch†at best in my humble opinion, especially if you would like to see a very “svelte†Ann Dvorak in her early 20’s (insert wolf whistle here).
It’s not my favorite either, but the lobby cards are pretty!
being a wellman picture makes it more disappointing than anything else. he didnt normally serve up such run of the mill fare but its still fun and LYLE is in it, haha! great LC’s tho!!!
In the words of Grandpa Simpson, “If we don’t start watching this Super Bowl thing, it might not catch on.”
Bob, I hope you realize that commenting on this site means you have volunteered to be a guest writer for the Ann Dvorak blog-a-thon.
