While she generally no longer had the name above the title, these later films gave her the opportunity to play some colorful characters which resulted in memorable performances. In <a title=\"Purchase the Long Night\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000GTJS8A\/104-1166410-1460750?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=anndvoholsfor-20&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=B000GTJS8A\" target=\"_blank\">the Long Night<\/a> she plays an assistant to the domineering magician Maximilian (Vincent Price). She has a soft spot for blue collar Joe (Henry Fonda) whose romance with a fragile girl (Barbara Bel Geddes) causes him to cross the temperamental magician.<\/p>\n<p>Her character, Charlene, is hardened but sympathetic and Ann more than holds her own while sharing the screen with Price and Fonda. She was a naturally talented actress, but always benefited from working with strong directors (<strong><a title=\"Scarface images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Scarface%20(1932)\" target=\"_self\">Howard<\/a> <a title=\"The Crowd Roars images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Crowd%20Roars%20(1932)\" target=\"_self\">Hawks,<\/a> <a title=\"Three on a Match images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Three%20On%20a%20Match%20(1932)\" target=\"_self\">Mervyn<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a title=\"Heat Lightning images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Heat%20Lightning%20(1934)\" target=\"_self\">LeRoy<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a title=\"A Life of Her Own images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Life%20of%20Her%20Own%20(1950)\" target=\"_self\">George Cukor<\/a>)<\/strong> and<strong> <a title=\"The Long Night images\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anndvorak.com\/cms\/Filmography\/?directory=Long%20Night%20(1947)\" target=\"_self\">Anatole Litvak<\/a><\/strong> is no exception.<\/p>\n<p>The Long Night is a gritty, but stylish noir thriller, and even though Ann Dvorak does not have a lot of screen time, it&#8217;s still worth watching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Long Night is going to air on Turner Classic Movies on Friday, March 20th at 8:00pm EST By the late 1940s, Ann Dvorak had pretty much been relegated to supporting roles.
