Ann Dvorak Paper Dolls

Year of Ann Dvorak: Day 202

PaperDolls

After 15 years of collecting on Ann Dvorak, I’ve acquired a lot of run-of-the-mill memorabilia items such as stills, lobby cards, and posters. I’ve also picked up a few unusual promotional items like these paper dolls. They ran in the Sunday issue of a newspaper, on the back of the comics page. Judging from the costumes and likeness, I would place these around 1935. I bought them already cut up, so I don’t know if it this was some sort of promotional tie-in for a movie or just a general Warner Bros. promo. Whatever their original purpose was, now they serve as a reminder that if one collects on a 1930s movie star, there will never be an end to the amount of stuff out there waiting to be bought.

Seeing these paper dolls got me to thinking that the composition of the “Ann’s Fans”/”Christina’s Crew” regulars around here seems to be lacking any type of recognizable, shall we say, feminine identity.

This should not be. Ann’s appeal reaches across any gender lines.

The Personnel Department needs to get on the ball and find or recruit more qualified females.

Vienna and Christina are around and comment sometimes, but yes, the Dvorak devotees who hang around here do tend to be the guys. I for one am happy for every last comment, no matter who makes them!

We Dvorak devotees, or Ann’s Acolytes, I think are understandably more of the male persuasion. I once read that one of the fascinations of movies is that it allows you to fall in love with strangers. I think this happens more frequently with guys rather than gals. Just my opinion, I may be wrong about that. And with Ann, there is the added appeal that she is widely unknown to the general public, thus making her fans (both male and female) feel like they are in on a “great secret”.

Over the years, I feel like I have been contacted by an equal number of men and women who are Ann-D fans. As for the younger set who are active on social media, it’s mainly the gals who are singing Ann’s praises. It’ll be interesting to see what the response to the book is.

As much as I have been enamored with the movies, I always fell in love with the rock stars not the actors.

This is from a series of paper dolls ran in the newspapers in 1935. I wish I could copy paste the one uncut I have. Have a bunch of the paper dolls they did then.
